These two related patents introduced a fundamental idea for making the Internet of Things easier to build and program: allowing many different kinds of physical devices—sensors, appliances, controls, and actuators—to be connected and used by software through a common, uniform interface.

Before this approach, connecting a new device to a smart home or other intelligent environment often required developers to understand the particular hardware, communication technology, and low-level commands of that device. This made IoT systems difficult to build, expand, and maintain.

The patents introduced an abstraction layer between the physical devices and the applications that use them. A device is automatically represented as a software service. Applications can therefore interact with devices through software rather than dealing directly with their hardware details.

This creates several important capabilities:

• Device independence: Different brands and types of sensors and actuators can coexist in the same system.
• Plug-and-play integration: New devices can be added without redesigning the entire system.
• Programmability: Physical devices become software resources that developers can program and combine.

In simple terms, the patents helped establish an architectural principle of modern IoT: hide the complexity and differences of physical devices behind a common software layer, so that the physical world can be programmed much like software.
